A study published in JAMA Network Open revealed that pregnant women who received one of the mRNA Covid-19 vaccines had 10-fold higher antibody concentrations than those who were naturally infected with Covid virus. It was observed that the babies borne by these pregnant ladies showed a similar increase in antibody concentration.

In the study, 585 pregnant ladies were enrolled, out of whom 169 had been vaccinated but never infected and 408 had been infected but not vaccinated.

The researchers also found that vaccine timing played an important role in maximizing the transfer of antibodies. According to the study, antibodies were detected as early as 15 days after the first vaccine dose, along with an increment for several weeks after. Additionally, IgG antibodies were detected in the blood of more than 95% of the babies.

The study concluded that the time from infection or vaccination to delivery was the most important factor associated with the transfer efficiency of the antibodies. The study suggested that these findings could be used to frame optimal COVID-19 vaccination strategies during pregnancy.
